Applied Research and Innovation


At the Holmesglen Centre for Applied Research and Innovation, we collaborate with industry and not-for-profit partners to develop creative solutions to tomorrow's problems. Designed to support economic and employment growth through applied research, recent projects have been wide-ranging, from the health sciences through to architectural design, to sustainability and water use.

Key Project  Description 
New flooring system technology Holmesglen provided technical advice to local and global partners in the development and trial of a prototype for a new prefabricated flooring system. 
This project gave staff and students the opportunity to learn first-hand about an innovation that directly benefitted the building industry.
Sustainability and
water use  


South East Water and Holmesglen worked together in the design and development of a household test-rig to monitor rainwater hot-water solutions for a residential development.
Our building degree academic staff helped to build a test facility onsite which includes water tanks, pumps, filtration systems and fixtures attached to a model house. 
Once the research is complete and the technology proved viable, it will be applied to a new housing development in Melbourne's south east.
Holmesglen Private Hospital  
Holmesglen and Healthscope have broken new ground with the launch of a jointly run private hospital at our Moorabbin campus. 
The hospital provides clinical training to our health science students as well as health care to the local community. It also creates new opportunities for applied research and innovation in health services.
Mammography Online
Holmesglen partnered with BreastScreen Victoria to develop an online training program for radiographers. Named Mammography Online, the program was successfully launched in 2016.
This partnership will continue in 2018 with a longitudinal study to measure program outcomes. 
DNA Barcoding A team of Holmesglen students studying their Diploma of Laboratory Technology is using DNA barcoding technology to identify and record species in rural Victoria.
We conduct all our research at the Holmesglen Rural Learning Centre in Eildon with the support of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) at Snobs Creek. 
This project is part of a worldwide initiative to document and map all living species, in order to increase global conservation efforts.   
Type 1 Diabetes  research study
Holmesglen, the University of Dundee in Scotland and Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait are undertaking a research project to explore the psychosocial impact of Type 1 Diabetes on children from birth to eight-years old.
The study aims to increase community awareness and recognition of Type 1 Diabetes among parents, teachers and other relevant professionals.
Student applied research – Architectural Design Holmesglen’s Architectural Design students participate in a project-based design showcase during their final semester.
Student teams undertake extensive research on a particular site in Melbourne metropolitan (e.g. Fisherman’s Bend) and draw up design plans for a residential project.
Customer dietary requirements       Holmesglen and the National Heart Foundation have come together to explore the impact of dietary intolerances and allergies on the preparation of food in Victoria’s hotels and clubs. 
The project aims to provide a flexible training approach to help chefs meet the special dietary requirements of today’s customers.
Student applied research – hospitality and regional communities During their third year, our Bachelor of Hospitality Management students undertake applied research projects in the Murrindindi Shire.
Working with the Goulburn River Valley Tourism (GRVT) Association, small student teams align with existing businesses within the Shire. Their goal is to evaluate opportunities to advance that business’ capabilities in line with the broader regional perspective.   

The Holmesglen Centre for Applied Research and Innovation supports staff, faculties and its partnerships through the Holmesglen Applied Research and Innovation Fund.

We also provide a range of resources to help our researchers find funding and to support the development and implementation of applied research proposals.

Holmesglen staff member, Simon Bruce, was awarded 2017 ISS Institute Victorian Department of Education and Training (Higher Education Skills Group) Fellowship.
