This Certificate II in Engineering Studies aims to provide secondary school students with pre-employment training and pathways into the engineering manufacturing or related industries and entry into the wider engineering industry.

It will provide you with competencies in a range of engineering skills such as welding, basic machining, fabrication and use of hand and power tools.

This course is suitable if you have an interest in air-conditioning and refrigeration, CAD, electrical, mechanical, structural engineering, fabrication and panel beating.

Fabrication tradespeople learn to make and repair metal fabricated products, including the shaping, cutting and welding of metal.

They are often engaged in projects that involve heavy metal design in construction, mining, manufacturing, power generation and shipping industries.

At present, employer demand for engineering tradespeople exceeds supply.

The manufacturing and engineering area is the largest employment sector in Australia, with over one third of all job vacancies for trade qualified people.

Completing this course can provide you with a pathway into a highly rewarding career in a wide variety of industries.

This is a VET Delivered to Secondary Students course (previously VETiS) and can only be completed as part of your VCE or VCAL program.


The Certificate II in Engineering Studies pre-apprenticeship course is designed to provide pre-employment training and a pathway into the engineering industry.

It will provide you with a range of skills such as welding, reading and creating engineering drawings, basic machining, fabrication, and use of basic hand and power tools.

Fabrication trades people learn to make and repair metal fabricated products, including the shaping, cutting and welding of metal. They are often engaged in projects that involve heavy metal design in construction, mining, manufacturing, power generation and shipping industries.

This new qualification has been specifically developed to reflect the minimum training requirement specified for employment in the engineering and fabrication industry.


This course is a VET Delivered to Secondary Students (previously VETiS) program and can only be completed as part of your VCE or VCAL program.

It will provide you with a range of engineering skills such as computer aided design 2D and 3D, design principles, fabrication techniques and the use of hand and power of tools.The course is designed to give you the technical knowledge and skills to design and create 3D engineering models using cutting edge software such AutoCAD and Inventor.

As a student you will also be eligible to download the software for free. You will also balance out your technical skills with practical engineering skills by learning how to use relevant engineering equipment, such as a computer controlled plasma cutter.


The Certificate III in Engineering is the course to undertake if you want to work as a welder, sheet metal worker or boilermaker.

This Certificate IV in Engineering has streams specialising in fabrication as well as AutoCAD. Completion of the course will give you enhanced career opportunities in fields associated with fabrication, welding and 2D / 3D AutoCAD design.

You will be equipped with the skills to pursue opportunities in the metals industry, post trade and associated areas.

The Certificate IV in Engineering - Welding Ticket Pathway will provide you with a greater trade base and chance to develop post-trade level skills in welding techniques.

Designed for qualified tradespeople or those experienced in the industry, you will learn intermediate Arc, MIG, TIG welding techniques and advanced skills to become a coded welder. Coded welders earn higher wages than typical metal fabrication tradespersons.

The course prepares you for one or more welding certificates (1-9) as issued by Weld Australia (WA) - formerly known as Welding Technology Institute of Australia.

Completing certain units of study will allow you to obtain the necessary skills to undertake one or more of the Welding Certification exams with WA and to apply your skills immediately in industry as you work towards completing the course.

On completion of MEM40105 Certificate IV in Engineering, you will have gained all the required units of competency to prepare you for theoretical and practical examinations for a Welders Certification Ticket issued by Weld Australia.

The Diploma of Engineering - Advanced Trade will give you the skills and theoretical knowledge to work as an engineering tradesperson.

Depending on your chosen specialisation, you will complete subjects in either the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or Fabrication stream.
